The first step to any good old washday is a pre‑poo.
This is the step you do before you shampoo your hair. By doing a pre poo you are adding an extra layer of moisture to your hair before you strip it with a cleansing shampoo.
Doing a pre‑poo also allows you to detangle your hair before you shampoo it. Meaning you won’t lose as much hair during the whole process. Trust me it just makes life easier. There are plenty actual pre‑poo specific products but coconut oil is an easy go to that’s cheap and it’s always in the kitchen.
Follow these simple steps on washday to cleanse your hair. Whether it be a strict clarifying day or a gentle cleanse this method will ensure your hair is thoroughly washed whilst minimising hair loss and encouraging scalp stimulation.
Whether it’s a clarifying day or a regular shampoo, this is how I shampoo my hair on wash day. It works every time and my hair is always thoroughly cleansed after.
- Part your hair into smaller sections (4/6)
- Make sure the hair is wet and apply your shampoo.
- Apply it to to the roots then later let it stretch into the length of your strands. (They get washed regardless cause the water runs down)
- Massage the shampoo in with your finger tips not your nails
- Be thorough
- You may be able to finger detangle if your shampoo has slip, DO IT‼️
- Repeat the process in all sections
- If you have a scalp massager, USE IT‼️
- When all sections are saturated RINSE your whole head.
- Make sure to get in and under your hair.
- Once all suds are out your done, your cleansing is complete.
If you’ve pre pood, used a moisturising shampoo or deep conditioned first, your hair's probably already detangled by this point. But if it’s not and your hairs a bit stubborn, attempt to detangle with your conditioner.
- Section your hair into manageable sections. I do about 4.
- Make sure it is soaking wet and apply as much conditioner as you need. Be generous.
- Using your fingers, gently but thoroughly detangle your hair. Pull apart any tangles and get to the stage where you can run through your hair without getting stuck.
- Add water at anytime if you feel your hair getting dry
- Then use your detangling tool to go through your hair. Make sure your going from the ends up and be gentle!
- Repeat the process on all sections until all your hair is saturated and conditioned.
- Let it sit for a couple more minutes and then rinse it out.
- Continue to finger detangle while rinsing out and then follow it up with the detangling tool again.
- If you’ve worked gently and throughly, you shouldn’t lose that much hair.
It’s up to you whether you do this before you deep condition or after, whatever works.
It’s the same way you do a regular condition you can just alter it depending on how thorough you want it. Smaller/larger sections.
- Section your hair into four sections and then section them further down. (If you wanna be thorough)
- Make sure it is wet and apply as much deep conditioner as you need. Be generous. Make sure to apply it to your roots as well as your ends. Don’t neglect any part.
- Using your fingers, gently but thoroughly detangle your hair and distribute the product through your hair.
- Add water at anytime if you feel your hair getting dry
- Then use your detangling tool to go through your hair. Make sure your going from the ends up and be gentle!
- As you complete a section twist it up so it’s out the way.
- Repeat the process on all sections until all your hair is saturated and conditioned.
- It’s a deep condition so your advised to add heat. I either use a heated cap or a hooded dryer. If you don’t have either just use a plastic cap. Sometimes the product will say how long. I usually do minimum 20 minutes.
- After the 20 minutes loose out the plaits and rinse out the deep conditioner.
- Continue to finger detangle while rinsing out and then follow it up with the detangling tool again.
- If this is the last step before finishing the wash process you don’t have to rinse out all of the deep conditioner. Leave about 20% in.
